Mangaluru: One of the most eminent state universities in Malaysia, the University of Malaysia Sabah and St Aloysius College (Autonomous) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently. After several rounds of bilateral meetings and negotiations, including skype calls, both the institutions have agreed on engaging in active collaboration about organising joint conferences and online lectures on Chemistry, Food Sciences (oil extraction), Biotechnology, Bio-informatics, and Biology (Ethnomedicine).
It is also envisaged to conduct joint research in Leptin, Ghrelin, and Insulin in obesity in the ethnic population in Malaysia. Besides this, both the institutions have proposed to co-author scientific books and journals. The University of Malaysia Sabah has shown a keen interest in the community service and social outreach (like the Rural Immersion Program) carried out by St Aloysius College.
Both the institutions have proposed to share developed research sources because of the unique geographical positioning of each of these institutions like the Western Ghats as UMS’ Borneo islands (Sarawak & Sabah) with joint Research Publications.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the institutions was signed during the joint meeting held on December 17, by Professor Urban John Arnold D’Souza, Dean, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, University of Malaysia, Sabah and Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, Principal, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Mangalore in the presence of the Controller of Examinations, Dr Alwyn D’Sa and Dr Vincent Mascarenhas, Dean, International Programs. Heads of the departments of Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology, Chemistry and Bioinformatics were present to the meeting.
