There are few careers that are as rewarding in life as a police officer. As a police officer, you are tasked with protecting the community each day and preventing crime. There are many benefits to this line of work, but it is also challenging and completely different to a typical office job. This means that there are various skills and characteristics that a police officer needs to have in order to find success. These can be developed over time, so do not worry if you want to join the police but lack any of the following skills or characteristics.

Strong Communication Skills

As a protective figure in the local community, it is vital that you have strong communication skills and are able to speak to people of all ages and backgrounds and in different emotional states. You need to be convincing and persuasive with the language that you use and often commanding. In addition to this, you also need to possess excellent listening skills and be able to pick up on body language cues.

Approachability

As someone that is tasked with protecting the local community, it is important that you are approachable. Many people find police officers to be intimidating and you will want to avoid this at all costs. You need to command respect, but you also need to be someone that people can trust and feel comfortable around.

Attention To Detail

Police officers need to have high attention to detail as this is such an important part of the job. Small details are key in determining the sequences of events that led to the crime, so it is important that you are able to pay attention to and record all these details to get a clear idea of what has happened and link a suspect to the crime.

Self-Confidence

Being a police officer involves constantly stepping outside of your comfort zone and often into unpredictable situations. You also need to be someone that other people respect and will listen to, so self-confidence is essential in this line of work. If this is an area that you struggle with, there are lots of steps that you can take to develop self-confidence, which will help you to get ahead in your career and other areas of life.

Physical Fitness

You won’t be spending your time chasing down bad guys like you see on TV each day, but you do need to have a high level of physical fitness as a police officer. This is an active role that may require running, climbing, heavy lifting, and restraining criminals.

Criminology Degree

It is not essential, but you will find that a criminology degree is a great way to stand out from the crowd and develop knowledge that will help you to thrive in this role. A criminology degree will give you a broader view of crime as a whole and the psychological and social reasons why people commit crimes. This will help in your work as a police offer as well as help if you decide to pursue other careers in this field, such as social work or an addictions counselor. You do not need to have a background in law enforcement, and it is a qualification that will give you an edge in a competitive field.

Community Knowledge

When you work as a police officer, it is important that you have strong knowledge of the local area. Not only will this include the layout and the quickest route between places (both behind the wheel and on foot), but also important information like crime rates, demographics, local organizations, and gangs, just as a few examples. You also need to build up relationships with figures in the community over time, which is why communication skills and approachability are so important, as mentioned earlier.

Critical Thinking Skills

Police officers need to be able to think critically and make important decisions quickly. This is one of the hardest aspects of the job. Mistakes can happen, but you can reduce the likelihood of this by developing your critical thinking skills (you will also develop this ability through experience). It is possible to develop your critical thinking skills if this is an area that you currently struggle with and will make a big difference to your abilities.

Empathy

As a police officer, you need to be someone that is empathetic and able to understand people’s situations. Whether you are speaking to suspects, victims, witnesses, or anyone else, it is important that you are understanding and able to offer emotional support to those that need it. Police officers can sometimes have a negative reputation for not being empathetic, so this is an important attribute to have that could set you apart from the competition.

First Aid & CPR

Due to the nature of the work, you will be dealing with emergency medical situations on a regular basis. You will often arrive at a scene before an ambulance crew, which is why it is vital that you are able to provide basic first aid and CPR. This will be something that is taught during your training, but you can also develop it beforehand.

Ability To Work As Part Of A Team

Some people will join the police force because they want to be the hero, but really you need to understand that you are an important part of a much larger team. You will be working with other police offers and other professionals, which means that you need to know how to work with others and be able to carry out different roles within a team.

These are a few of the main things that you need in order to find success as a police officer. This is a unique role quite unlike any other, so it is important that you know what skills and attributes will be needed in order to succeed. Police work is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be challenging and require a wide range of different skills and attributes.
