Mangaluru: MLC Manjunath Bhandary has requested an increase in the honorarium to elected Panchayat representatives to fully accommodate themselves in the Panchayat Raj system. The statement by MLC Manjunath Bhandary is reproduced below:
“In the last 2 sessions, I had heatedly debated in the Council that the honorarium of the Panchayat elected representatives should be increased by at least 10,000 rupees and the Kerala model of governance should be followed. But the state government today increased the honorarium from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 only.
I had a feeling of hope that at least would raise 5000 rupees. The main reason for this is that the elected representatives of the Panchayat are directly responsive to the plight of the people in the rural areas. But the panchayat raj system has Reservations where women and the very backward are elected representatives and are economically Backward to lead their daily lives.
Therefore, I feel that if their honorarium is increased to at least Rs 5000, these elected representatives can fully accommodate themselves in the Panchayat Raj system.
That our concerted struggle for the increase in the honorarium of elected Panchayat representatives will continue, said Legislative Council Member Manjunath Bhandary.
