Falling Branches, Rising Fear: Indiranagar Residents Slam BBMP Inaction
Bengaluru: As pre-monsoon thunderstorms sweep through the city, residents of Indiranagar are voicing growing alarm over dangerously dry tree branches hanging over streets, posing threats to pedestrians, vehicles, homes, and power lines.
Famed for its lush green avenues, Indiranagar is now facing a safety crisis. Locals allege that the BBMP forest wing has neglected its pruning duties, leading to frequent incidents of branches snapping and, in some cases, entire trees toppling over. A recent case on CMH Road saw a tree fall onto a car, sparking fresh concerns.
In Indiranagar II Stage, residents highlight the risks posed by 40-year-old trees that now tower over 50 feet. “We’ve submitted multiple complaints and handed over letters to BBMP officials at every association meeting,” said Adithya R, secretary of the local welfare association. “Yet dangerous branches remain, and they keep falling.”
Dr Venkatesh T pointed out a specific tree near a yoga centre with limbs that could drop at any time. “I reported it weeks ago, but no one showed up.”
Another resident, Vidhya Balakrishna, shared that she had to pay BBMP workers from her pocket after they left trimmed branches outside her home for over a week. “The cleanup delay was frustrating. There are still hazardous branches nearby.”
BBMP’s assistant conservator of forests, Santosh Kumar MS, responded saying: “We prune along main roads annually. Complaints from internal roads are addressed case-by-case. Residents can report issues — the service is free.”
