food kodaguKushalnagar: The recent calamities that hit Kodagu and Kerala has brought to light several heroes. While most of Kodagu’s landscape has been washed away by the incessant rains, volunteers and personnel from various forces are putting in all their efforts to provide relief to the victims. There is no shortage of heartwarming stories and images of people of all ages and backgrounds, coming forward to do their part to help in the rescue and relief efforts.

While some are out there collecting funds to send to the affected regions, others are putting their physical selves on the front lines to either help with rescue efforts or to look after those who are taking refuge in various shelters that have been set up across the district.

One such episode was seen in Kodagu where an elderly couple is serving thousands of distressed persons out of the goodness of their hearts.

Meet 76-year-old Velayudhan and his wife, 64-year-old Parvathi, who have been cooking tirelessly at their home in Kushalnagar for 1400 people for the last eight days.

The couple hails from Kerala but, has been living in Kushalnagar for the last approximately 50 years. They have relatives in the affected regions of Kerala but unfortunately, as they have been out of touch for a very long time, they do not know about the situation of their extended family.

The couple, along with their 36-year-old son Rajiv and 40-50 of their neighbours, has happily been spending the last few days in the kitchen, cooking fresh meals for those who are struggling to find food to eat. For now, they are supplying food to the Kudige and Harangi areas. The food is delivered to the people’s homes. Those who are hungry and know about the couple’s work, come to their house in search of food and food is also given to hungry passers-by in the area.

“We cook the food out of whatever supplies have been donated by the generous people to the region,” Velayudhan told NewsKarnataka.

A tweet by Kodagu Connect (@KodaguConnect) regarding the couple, is going viral. The tweet that read: “76-year-old Velayudhan and his wife have been cooking tirelessly for 1000 people at a relief camp in Kushalnagar for the last four days. We bow to their commitment to help the flood-affected despite being senior citizens. Unsung heroes and heroines of our society,” was accompanied with a photo of the duo at their home.

Many on Twitter have commented on the post with appreciative words and blessings for the elderly couple.
