FIR Filed Against CET Centre Officials Over Janivara Removal Incident
A police case has been registered against officials of Adichunchanagiri PU College, a CET examination centre, for allegedly asking Brahmin students to remove their ‘Janivaras’ (sacred threads) before entering the exam hall. The FIR follows a formal complaint lodged by Natraj Bhagavath of the Karnataka Brahmin Sabha.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has since triggered community outrage and statewide debate over religious freedom during exams.
FIR Details:
The case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:
- Section 115(2) – Voluntarily causing hurt
- Section 299 – Malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings
- Section 351(1) – Criminal intimidation
- Section 352 – Intentional insult to provoke breach of peace
- Section 3(5) – Common intention
The complainant accused the centre staff of hurting religious sentiments and claimed that no action was taken despite alerting the district administration.
What Happened?
Three students at the CET centre were allegedly asked to remove their sacred threads. One student refused but was eventually allowed to sit the exam, while two complied and removed their Janivaras.
College authorities have denied responsibility, stating that only the premises were provided for the exam and that they were not involved in its conduct. Examination staff, meanwhile, claim they only asked students to remove wrist threads (Kashi Dhara) and not the Janivara or shirts.
“These are serious allegations that need verification. A detailed inquiry is underway,” a senior police officer said.
Government Response:
State Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar reaffirmed that action will be taken against those found responsible. The CET, a key entrance test for professional courses, has come under intense scrutiny over religious sensitivities vs. exam protocols.
