Fishing vessel catches fire, loss of ₹15 lakh
A moored fishing vessel near the bridge at Baputhota fishing harbor went up in flames on February 19, leading to an estimated loss of ₹15 lakh.
The ill-fated trawler, ‘Raviprakash,’ owned by Janardhan T Kanchan from Malpe, was stationed in the estuary after a day at sea when the blaze erupted. Vigilant local fishermen spotted the fire and swiftly informed authorities, preventing a larger catastrophe.
With nearly 30 other boats docked in close proximity, fears of the fire spreading loomed large. However, the rising tide acted as a natural barrier, stopping the flames from engulfing neighboring vessels.
Emergency responders, along with local residents, rushed to the scene and battled the flames. Despite their best efforts, the boat was completely consumed by fire.
The destruction extended beyond the vessel itself, as valuable equipment, including fishing nets, GPS systems, a fish finder, a water tank, life jackets, and 200 liters of diesel, were all lost in the inferno.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, while the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities of docked boats.
