Chennai-based chef prepares idlis weighing 107 kgs to welcome for Donald Trump

trump idli 24022020Chennai: Even before US President Donald Trump and his family landed in India on February 24, welcome gestures started pouring in from all corners. While many wrote messages on social media, some individuals displayed their excitement for the 2-day event by creating artwork.

A vegetable and fruit carving artist carved images of Donald Trump and Narendra Modi on watermelon as a welcome gesture. He took about two hours to carve the images, and also intricately added an image of the Taj Mahal in the background. Then a Jaipur-based cutlery designer made a set of gold and silver-plated tableware for the personal use of the US president and his wife.

But the biggest welcome gift, and quite literally so, has come from a Chennai-based chef and food artist.

Iniavan prepared three massive idlis and sculpted faces of PM Modi and President Trump on two of them. The third one featured the national flags of India and the USA. The three idlis, which weigh a total of 107 kilograms, took 36 hours to prepare with the help of six assistants.

US President Trump and First Lady Melania arrived at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhai International Airport at 11:50 PM on Monday. PM Narendra Modi personally received the US first couple and hugged President Trump as he welcomed him.

Following the welcome, Trump Melania made a stopover at the Sabarmati Ashram around 12.30 PM and paid their tributes to India’s Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Both Melania and Trump tried their hands at spinning the charkha. The American first couple seemed intrigued by the Khadi spinning experience with the US President apparently asking PM Modi questions on how it was done.
