Lovemaking kookaburras on electrical pole cause massive power outage in Australia

A pair of kookaburras were held responsible for a massive power outage in Perth that affected at least 1,000 residential homes.

According to reports, the birds were lovemaking too close to high-tension electrical wires that provided power to several localities in Perth. The birds zapped themselves to death but the sudden surge in power resulted in a massive blackout.

The birds were actually spotted by a man who was out with his dog for a walk near the corner of Albion Place and Fair Lane Drive in Carine.

According to local witnesses, the birds got too close to the wires and triggered “two big blue flashes” and a series of bangs that eventually killed the power of the locality and other adjacent localities.

The incident was confirmed by officials of Western power who examined the spot to assess the damage. “It seems to be a case of a couple of lovebirds who have made the wrong connection, unfortunately,” Western Power spokesman Paul Entwistle was quoted by Vice.com.

The birds were electrocuted with anything between 1,55,000 – 7,65,000 volts, local reports said. As the pole was pretty close to the power substation, the process of restoration took several hours, said Paul Entwistle.

“Just because of protocols we [had] to have a bit of a look around the sub-station too to make sure there was no flash-over that’s gone back into the substation,” said Paul.
