Gadag Police Open Fire as Notorious Criminal Tries to Escape
Gadag: In a dramatic turn of events, Gadag police shot and injured a notorious criminal who attempted to flee from custody at Dambal village on Monday. The accused, Jayasimha Modekar, along with three police personnel, sustained injuries during the incident.
According to Gadag SP B.S. Nemagoud, the Mundargi police had arrested three suspects—Manjunath Modiker, Ramesh Modiker, and Jayasimha Modiker—for their alleged involvement in a house theft case. While being transported to the Laxmeshwar police station for interrogation, 22-year-old Jayasimha Durgamma Modiker, a resident of Janata Colony in Jalahalli, Devadurga taluk, attempted to escape from the police van.
Despite repeated warnings, the accused attacked a police officer using his handcuffs. In response, Mundargi Circle Inspector Manjunath Kusugal fired two rounds at Jayasimha’s left leg in an act of self-defense. The injured accused and police officer Veeresh Bisnalli were rushed to GIMS hospital for treatment.
Police revealed that Jayasimha is a habitual offender wanted in multiple cases across Kagawad, Bagewadi, and Tikota police stations. Authorities suspect his involvement in crimes beyond Karnataka, including in Andhra Pradesh. The trio has a long history of vehicle theft, house burglaries, and other criminal activities.
