Government decides to ban hijab for fair SSLC exam practice
The hijab issue in Karnataka remains unresolved as the Congress government is yet to make a formal decision on whether students will be allowed to wear the hijab during the upcoming SSLC exams. Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that a decision would be made after a detailed discussion, as the exams are still a month away.
Karnataka’s Minister for School Education, Madhu Bangarappa, clarified that the issue is still pending before the Supreme Court. The uncertainty has caused concern among educators, with one headmaster noting the need for clear guidelines to avoid confusion on exam day.
The hijab controversy dates back to 2022, when students at the Government PU College in Udupi were barred from wearing the hijab to class, leading to protests. The state government subsequently issued guidelines prohibiting religious attire in institutions with dress codes. Legal challenges followed, with the Karnataka High Court upholding the ban, stating the hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam. The case is now before the Supreme Court.
Minister Priyank Kharge had indicated that the Congress government might reverse the bans, but no action has been taken so far, leaving the issue in limbo. BJP spokesperson Prakash S emphasized that the matter is ultimately for the Supreme Court to decide, making any government discussions moot in the meantime.
