Haveri Dairy Farmers Hit by Milk Price Cut Despite Retail Hike
Haveri: Even as the state government has announced a ₹4 per litre increase in milk prices for consumers, the Haveri Milk Union has unexpectedly reduced the procurement rate by ₹3.50 per litre, leaving dairy farmers in distress.
The revised pricing, effective from March 28, has sparked frustration among milk producers. Previously, the union paid ₹43 per litre for buffalo milk and ₹30.50 per litre for cow milk. However, citing financial losses, the union has now lowered the rates to ₹39.50 and ₹27 per litre, respectively.
According to the directive from Havemul’s management, the reduction was necessary due to a decline in demand for dairy products. The statement further explained that the milk union had been paying higher rates to farmers, resulting in financial strain. To mitigate these losses, the procurement price adjustment was deemed essential.
However, dairy farmers have strongly opposed this move, questioning why their earnings are being slashed while consumers are being charged more. Many argue that if milk is being sold at a higher price, farmers should receive better compensation instead of bearing the brunt of the financial burden.
This price drop has added to the challenges faced by farmers, who are already dealing with rising costs of fodder and livestock maintenance. The discontent among milk producers continues to grow, with calls for a fairer pricing system gaining momentum.
