Highway duty turns fatal as constable run over by lorry
A tragic incident unfolded on NH-48 near Hebbalu when Ramappa Poojary (33), a constable with the District Armed Reserve Police Force, lost his life after being hit by a speeding lorry on Tuesday. He was performing vehicle checks near a toll booth, focusing on traffic heading towards Chitradurga from Davangere.
While on duty enforcing highway traffic norms, Ramappa signaled a lorry to halt. According to police sources, the driver feigned compliance, then accelerated in an attempt to flee, fatally hitting the constable in the process.
Ramappa sustained severe injuries and was quickly transported to SS Hi-tech Hospital, but succumbed during treatment. A case has been registered by the rural police, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver.
Originally from Bagalkot district, Ramappa joined the police force in 2016. Recently, he was posted on highway traffic enforcement duty, responsible for checking licenses, seat belts, and penalizing violators.
The shocking nature of his death has raised concerns about the risks faced by personnel on road safety duty, especially when dealing with non-compliant and reckless drivers. His colleagues mourn the loss of a dedicated officer, who was committed to keeping the highways safe.
