India Prepares for 76th Republic Day Celebrations
India is set to celebrate its 76th Republic Day on Sunday, January 26, with a grand parade in the national capital, showcasing vibrant tableaux from various states and marching contingents from the Indian armed forces.
Although India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, it formally became a republic on January 26, 1950, with the adoption of its Constitution.
How India Became a Republic in 1950 The journey toward India’s sovereignty as a democratic republic reached its peak on January 26, 1950. However, the foundation was laid much earlier. In 1929, the Congress party declared ‘Purna Swaraj’ and rejected the dominion status proposed by the British.
The idea of a fully independent republic began taking shape in 1920, following the first general elections, which established the bicameral central legislature and provincial councils.
Post-Independence Transition Despite gaining independence in 1947, India continued under the British-created Government of India Act of 1935. Reforms soon followed, and a drafting committee led by Dr. BR Ambedkar was formed to create a new Constitution for India. The efforts of this committee culminated in the creation of the Indian Constitution, which took effect on January 26, 1950.
This historic day marked the end of colonial rule and the establishment of a democratic republic, with Dr. Rajendra Prasad assuming office as the country’s first president.
