A four-year-old girl was rescued after being abducted from Tarakeshwar in West Bengal’s Hooghly district early on Saturday, police said. The child, who belongs to a nomadic community, was found injured near a railway drain the following afternoon and is currently undergoing treatment.
Child abducted from makeshift shelter
According to the police, the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday while the child was asleep beside her grandmother near a railway shed. The family, which had been staying there after their houses were demolished, alleged that someone entered their sleeping area and took the girl away.
“When we woke up, she was missing. We looked everywhere and informed the police immediately,” said the child’s grandmother.
Victim receiving treatment, accused arrested
The child was located later that day and rushed to a nearby hospital in Tarakeshwar, where she remains under medical supervision. Doctors have described her condition as serious but stable.
Police said one person has been arrested in connection with the case. “A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections. The accused is being interrogated,” said a senior officer from Hooghly Rural Police.
Political reactions over police response
The incident has triggered political reactions, with the opposition BJP alleging delay in police action. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government and demanded strict action.
Meanwhile, police officials stated that the case was registered promptly and that all necessary procedures are being followed. “We are investigating the matter thoroughly. The safety and well-being of the child remain our top priority,” an officer said.
Authorities assure strict action
Child welfare authorities have been informed and are assisting in ensuring proper care for the survivor. Officials also said that counselling support is being arranged for the victim and her family.
Local residents expressed concern over the safety of homeless families living near public areas and urged authorities to provide shelter facilities and better surveillance.
Investigation continues
Police said that further investigation is underway to determine the motive and identify any other individuals involved. The accused remains in custody, and a detailed report is expected soon.
