Kolkata: Crude bombs were hurled and shots fired upon the vehicle of TMC MLA Biswanath Das, killing three people, including a party member, at a petrol pump in Joynagar in 24 South Parganas district of West Bengal, around 7.35 pm on Thursday.
People killed in the attack were Sarfuddin Khan, a senior member of ‘Jai Hind Bahini’ of the TMC, Das’s driver Moinuddin and a pedestrian.
The MLA has said that he normally visits the petrol pump for a cup of tea, and alleged that he was the intended target. But on the fateful evening he got down at his party office.
Speaking to News18, Das said, “I was on anchal (area) tour. In the evening, I got down at Bahuru TMC party office and asked my driver Babu to get the car’s tank full. He left for a nearby petrol pump at Joynagar and after 15 minutes I received a call that some goons hurled crude bombs and fired indiscriminately at my car.”
As alleged by Das, there were about six attackers who opened fire randomly on the vehicle and escaped on two wheelers parked nearby.
The police are investigating the matter and also inspecting the CCTV footage at the petrol pump to identify the criminals.
“The law and order situation in Bengal is a matter of concern. Now a days we are hearing a new word called ‘shoot out’. What is going on here in Bengal? We condemn such attack,” said CPI (M) Legislature Sujan Chakraborty.
TMC MP Subhasish Chakraborty has alleged that the attack was carried out by hired guns.
