Chennai: Close on the heels of former Indian cricket team skipper MS Dhoni’s little daughter being issued rape threats on social media for his team’s defeat in IPL, actor Vijay Sethupathi’s daughter too received rape threats after her father decided to walk out of the biopic ‘800’.
Sethupathi was roped in to play the role of Sri Lankan spinner Muttaiah Muralidharan. However, soon the decision to play the role stoked a controversy when many reminded Sethupathi about the Lankan-Tamilian equation.
Pro-Tamil groups, netizens and several filmmakers requested Vijay Sethupathi to walk out of the film due to the politics involved.
It is believed that Cricketer Muralidhran had made a comment in favour of Sri Lankan Civil War, that killed thousands of Eelam Tamils. This had sparked emotions and soon Sethupathi decided to walk out of the film.
However, this move did not go down with a section of people. Replying to a tweet posted by Vijay Sethupathi, a troll made a remark of raping his daughter so that the actor would understand the pain of Eelam Tamils.
Many furious twitter users shared the person’s Twitter handle asking everyone to report the tweet and his profile.
In a recent statement, cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan said that the film is being politicised and also requested Vijay Sethupathi to opt out of the film.
Directed by MS Sripathy, 800 is a story that chronicles the life and struggles of Muttiah Muralitharan.
