Jharkhand: Sweta Mandal, a blind student of Ranchi University has won a gold medal in her master’s course. However, what has left many gaping with surprise is that she has completed this course without using Braille.
She is currently pursuing an integrated course in MPhil and PhD at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. Sweta wishes to make a career in teaching and research.

She is said to have lost her eyesight in Class 10. Daughter of doctors based in Chaibasa, Sweta’s eyesight started failing gradually and she lost it within a few days.

Speaking to sources her mother said that her daughter did not use Braille and it was she who would read and record cassettes for her daughter during free time in her clinic. Now the proud mother says that her daughter fought all odds with rising spirits and always stayed motivated.

Sweta said that she was not trained in using Braille and there were not many books available in it either, she took the help of a text-to-speech software, namely the Johnniac Open Shop System.

Swetha criticising present education system said that mere notifying of rules for students with special needs does not help.
