Country-made bomb blast claims fisherman’s life in Kannur

Kannur: A country-made bomb kept hidden in a vacant plot near a coconut farm at Dharmadam Swamikunnu at Kannur killed 45-year-old Sajeevan, a fisherman.

It is said that the victim had gone to the plot to collect firewood. The locals who rushed to the spot after hearing a loud explosion saw Sajeevan lying in pool of blood.

Police said that the bomb was reportedly kept hidden underneath a fallen banyan tree. The victim might have taken the bomb and examined it. A bomb disposal squad along with sniffer dogs reached the spot and conducted a thorough search in the area.

Soon after the incident CPM and the RSS have started the blame game.

While CPM leaders alleged that the RSS was making bombs in the region, the RSS leadership said the CPM was responsible for the incident.

Police have issued a warning to local residents asking them not to handle unidentified objects lying in vacant plots in the region and to immediately alert the police.

In June 2015, two CPM men were killed while they were making crude bombs at an abandoned plot at Kolavallur in the district. In October 2015, police recovered a huge cache of arms, including 32 country-made bombs, from an abandoned plot at Koothuparamba.
