Deadly rains claim over 150 lives in Assam and Bihar, affect one crore people

Bihar/Assam: The catastrophic rains lashing parts of north and north eastern parts of the country have taken the lives of 92 in Bihar with 14 deaths on Friday, July 20, and at least 47 in Assam with 11 casualties on July 19.

The headcount of deaths from rain, floods in Assam and Bihar has touched 150 and more than 1 crore people are affected.

In Bihar, as many as 27 people lives have been lost thus far in the worst affected district Sitamarhi. A 26-year-old man and seven children were killed in Nawada district in a lightning strike on Friday afternoon.

With 66.76 lakh people affected so far in Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has initiated a drive to disburse Rs 180 Crore via direct cash transfer to the affected people. A compensation of Rs 4 lakh compensation will be provided to the families of each of the deceased.

In Assam, 48.87 lakh people are hit the nature’s fury in 27 out of 33 districts in the state. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 3,705 villages have felt the impact of rain and floods.

A total of 1.79 lakh hectare agricultural land is under water and about 90 percent of rhinoceros’ habitats are inundated including the Kaziranga National Park and the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Thursday, about 2.26 lakh have been displaced and sheltered in 1,080 relief camps and 689 relief distribution centres.
