Delhi: Living becomes costlier after LPG cylinder price hike - 3 min read

New Delhi: Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have hiked the rates of domestic 14.2 kg LPG cylinders by Rs. 50 on Wednesday July 6 with immediate effect. Now, with the recent price hikes, a domestic cylinder would cost Rs. 1,052.50 in Mumbai, Rs. 1,079 in Kolkata, and Rs. 1,068.50 in Chennai.

A 19 – kg commercial cylinder’s cost was decreased by Rs. 8.50. According to a price notification from state-owned fuel retailers, a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder now costs Rs. 2,021 in Delhi as compared to Rs. 2,219 earlier.

However, the cost of a domestic cylinder has increased to Rs. 1055.5 in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, the cost of a 5 kg domestic cylinder went up by Rs. 18 on Wednesday. However, a 19 – kg commercial cylinder has been decreased by Rs. 8.50.

It can be recalled that it was on May 19 that domestic cylinder prices were revised. Following the falling international rates, commercial LPG prices were reduced by Rs.198 on July 1. This cost has been decreased by Rs. 135 in June.

The sudden hike in LPG cylinder price has taken people by surprise. Netizens have expressed their woes on social media platforms with #lpgcylinder. Presently, it is trending third on Twitter.

The official Twitter handle of West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad wrote, “It is refreshing to know Domestic LPG will cost ₹50 more. Don’t Worry, India. Modiji is Compensating for the MLAs he purchased. Ye Hai Modi ji ke Ache Din!”

Another user said, “Good old days when BJP in opposition performed better than the BJP in power!”

A journalist wrote that he tried booking an LPG cylinder and it kept failing. “Today morning cylinder prices were up by 50 rs. Don’t tell me it’s not intentional,” he added.

“Now i know where all the money are being diverted and for replacing those black money the central is imposing taxes on everything we know. Even a hospital bed will ask for taxes from common man! After everything happening, we cannot even speak as a citizen,” was a post from another Twitter user.

A user slammed the BJP – led government saying that 50 shiv sena mlas were bought and therefore Rs. 50 has been increased. “Maths was never this easy before 2014,” he remarked.

Another user called the move as yet another classic example of how #PMCARES for the common man! “@narendramodi keeps showering his love & affection on the common man through price hikes every fortnight. Oh wait, when is the next election?,” he asked.

There were even hilarious posts and memes showing how the ruling party fought and staged a dharna in 2014 when the LPG cylinder price was hiked and what the same is doing to the common man.

Many stated that with the revised prices effective from July 6, the Government has made the struggles of the surviving middle-class worse than it already is.
