New Delhi: Former Chief Election Commissioner, OP Rawat, on Monday stated that demonetisation has failed to curb misuse of money during elections. He said that though a common belief was that the move would help in reducing the misuse of money during polls and elections, there has been no evidence to suggest the same.
He was quoted by ANI as saying, “After demonetisation it was thought that misuse of money during election will be brought down. But it couldn’t be proved on basis of the data of the seizures. Compared to previous elections, there were more seizures in the same states”.
When questioned about black money, he answered that there were no checks conducted to prove the use of black money during the elections. These remarks of his come a day after Sunil Arora took charge as the CEC following the end of his tenure in the post.
