India on Monday granted rapid overflight clearance to a Pakistani aircraft carrying humanitarian aid for flood-ravaged Sri Lanka, countering claims in sections of Pakistani media that New Delhi had refused airspace access.
Officials said Pakistan submitted its request at 1:00 PM IST on December 1 and received approval by 5:30 PM IST, emphasising that India expedited the process because the mission was urgent and humanitarian in nature.
“Given that the request pertained to assistance for Sri Lanka, the Government of India cleared it at the shortest notice period of four hours,” officials clarified.
Sri Lanka Reels Under Cyclone Ditwah
Cyclone Ditwah has caused catastrophic destruction across Sri Lanka, claiming over 200 lives, displacing thousands and prompting the government to declare a national emergency. With widespread flooding and collapsed infrastructure, Colombo has sought help from regional partners.
India has emerged as the primary responder, deploying naval ships, Air Force assets, NDRF teams, medical supplies and emergency relief material.

Guided by Vision Mahasagar, India reiterated that it will continue providing all necessary aid in the coming days, reinforcing its position as the region’s First Responder during humanitarian crises.
