New Delhi: Every aircraft, be it passenger or cargo, comes with an instrument called ‘Black Box’, which serves as a vital component when it comes to air crash investigation. A similar instrument is now introduced in the trains by the Indian Railways.

Answering a written question in the lower house (Lok Sabha) Minister of State Railways Rajen Gohain said that the railway department had already begun installation of LCAVR (Loco Cab Audi-Video Recording System) and CVVRS (Crew Voice Video Recording System) in both diesel and electric locomotives.

He said that these two instruments would function in the same way as that of the black box in aircraft.

According to the ministry currently, these systems are incorporated in about 23 diesel-run-trains and 3 electric-run-trains.

Gohain also mentioned that according to the Railway Budget of 2018-19, around 3500 LCVR/CVVRS instruments are ordered for which the cost is estimated at Rs 100.40 Crore.

The ministry believes that this instrument will function to its utmost potential and help in analysing rail accidents clearly pointing at human negligence/fault or technical issues.

Gohain said that one smart coach was already functional from June which was manufactured in the Modern Coach Factory located in Raebareli.

He has assured of many such smart coaches, which, he said, would add value to the ‘Make in India’ concept by PM Modi and that the Indian Railways would function seamlessly with world-class, sensor-equipped smart coaches.
