New Delhi: In an unusual albeit, interesting way, the Indian Railways has come up with a solution to ward off the elephants from train tracks, by playing the sound of bees.
Reportedly, nearly 50 buzzing amplifiers have been deployed as part of ‘Plan Bee’ in a dozen ‘elephant corridors’ in the vast forests of Assam, home to nearly 6,000 elephants, 20 percent of the country’s total. It is said that the sound of bees scare elephants away.
According to sources from the Indian Railways, the railway officials came up with a buzzing device which is played as the trains approach the points which are frequently visited by the elephants and can be heard for up to 600 metres. The efficiency test of the devices was done in 2017 before they were deployed last year.
Reportedly, the novel approach has won the railway team accolades from animal conservationists and on Tuesday, July 9, an award for ‘best innovative idea’ from the Indian Railways for Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) was also given.
