Kancheepuram: The burnt body of a woman was discovered on May 28 by Tamil Nadu Police on the Chengalpettu highway in the Kancheepuram district.

Two days after having found the body, the police are of the opinion it might belong to Jesna, a 20-year-old woman who went missing from Kerala in March. The Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police (SP) said that the Kerala Police, who were in-charge of Jesna’s case, were on their way to Kancheepuram.

Jesna, a B.Com student, was on the way to her aunt’s house in Kottayam district when she went missing on March 22. Her sudden disappearance led to protests by many groups in the state, demanding a detailed investigation of the case.

The SP informed that the face of the recovered body has not been completely identified and has been shifted to Changalpattu Medical College Hospital.

The SP also said, “The extent of burns to the body are such that the face is not recognizable. But, there are braces on the woman’s teeth and this is one of the reasons why we suspect the body could be Jesna’s. So far, nothing has been confirmed but, we have decided to inform the Kerala police since the body had braces on the teeth and the general physique resembled Jesna’s.”

The Pathanamthitta SP said that investigation teams were deployed to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and another team was on the way to Kancheepuram to determine if the body was indeed that of Jesna.

Thiruvalla DySP, the chief investigating officer of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was set up to investigate the girl’s disappearance said, “We cannot say anything before verifying the information. The Tamil Nadu police passed on this information to us because when a missing case is being investigated, we generally send out requests to DGPs of other states to inform us if any unidentified body is found.”

Earlier in the month of May, a team of investigators went to Bengaluru based on information received that a body resembling Jesna was found there. Unfortunately, the lead did not pan out.
