Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today informed that the spread of the Covid cases in Kerala has decreased by 42%. “There is a 15% decline in the test positivity rate as compared to last week. The average test positivity rate for the last three days is 11.5%.  The number of new cases during June 11-13 has dropped by 4.2% over the previous three days. The number of active cases has decreased by 14.43% and the TPR also declined by 10.04% over this period.”

Malappuram district has the highest TPR of 13.8% while Kottayam district has the lowest at 8.8%. Alappuzha, Kannur and Kozhikode districts have a TPR less than 10% and in the remaining 10 districts, it ranges from 10 to 13.80%.

Briefing the media, the Chief Minister said, “Our state is moving forward with relaxations in view of the reduced spread of the disease after a 40-day lockdown. Local self-governing bodies are classified on the basis of test positivity rate and restrictions are implemented accordingly. There must be full cooperation on all sides with these regulations. We should continue to exercise caution as during the lockdown phase. Strict precautions should be taken as we are now facing a highly contagious delta variant of the virus. The third wave can be prevented if we all are vigilant as a community. There is also a possibility that the third wave may be due to the emergence of the Covid virus, which is more genetically modified than the delta virus. The government is making the necessary preparations to deal with any situation and there will be no complacency in this regard.”

Meanwhile, 11,361 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Kerala today from 1,11,124 sample tests in the last 24 hours. 90 recent deaths were confirmed as due to Covid and the related death toll in the State is now 11,833. At the same time, 12,147 patients have recovered from the disease and at present, there are 1,07,682 persons under treatment in the State.

The CM informed that about 40% of the people in Kerala have been vaccinated with the first dose. “We will speed up the vaccination as per the availability of the vaccine. At the same time, we must be careful to avoid congestion at vaccine centres. They should not become centres of disease transmission. The authorities and the people must act responsibly in this regard.”

He also disclosed that so far 73 cases of black fungus or mucosal mycosis were reported in the State. 50 of them are still under treatment while eight were cured and 15 have died.

The Government hospitals in Kerala currently has 3,040 ICU beds. Of these, 1,137 beds are being used for the treatment of Covid patients and 736 beds for non-Covid patients. About 61.6% of the ICU beds in government hospitals are now occupied. Of the 7,468 ICU beds in private hospitals, 1,091 are used to treat Covid patients. The total number of ventilators currently available in government hospitals is 2,293. Of these, 611 ventilators are in use for the treatment of Covid patients and 163 for the treatment of non-Covid patients. About 33.8 % of ventilators in government hospitals are in use. Of the 2,432 ventilators in private hospitals, 508 are currently being used for Covid treatment.

Paediatric intensive care facilities are being strengthened to ensure expert treatment of children in the event of a third wave. An additional 10-bed paediatric ICU will be established in medical college hospitals.
