Kolkata: A house-of-horror story emerged from Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on Monday, December 24.
A 38-year-old man was found living with the dead body of his 77-year-old mother over the last 18 days. The Bidhanagar North police had little idea as to what awaited them at the Salt Lake. A relative of 38-year-old Maithreya Bhattacharya had informed the police that Maithreya had sought his help to bury the dead body of his mother, on Sunday evening. At about 10 pm, when the police reached the two-storeyed bungalow, they were shocked to see a maggot infested human body on a wooden cupboard. The son told the cops that he was waiting for an ‘auspicious moment’ over the last 18 days to bury his mother’s body.
He reportedly also told the police that the plan was to wait for three more days, complete the 21-day cycle and then bury the body. This, he said was compulsory according to a ritual that he had learnt and believed in, after embracing a different religious sect.
Maithreya’s father Gorachand Bhattacharya was a renowned neurosurgeon. He too passed away under mysterious circumstances in 2013. While some say he had set himself ablaze, many say his clothes caught fire during pooja and he was charred to death.
However, the police have sent the decomposed body of Krishna Bhattacharya for Post Mortem and are still trying to understand the reasons and logic behind Maithreya’s bizarre act.
It is not the first time that Kolkatta was left shocked with such eerie behaviour.
About three-years-ago, 44-year-old Partho De was found living with the skeleton of his dead sister and two pet dogs for six months at their Robinson Street home. About eight months back, Behala resident Subhabrata Majumdar was found having preserved his dead mother’s body for three years in an industrial freezer.
