Kukke turns tense as supporters of temple, muth fight it out in open

Sullia: Two factions of Hindutva wings fought it out in Kukke Subramanya temple area leading to a tense situation.

Orator Chaithra Kundapura and Hindu Jagarana Vedike members got into an altercation over some issue leading to chaotic episodes that rendered one person injured and resulted in the detention of Chaithra and her supporters.

Some of the local residents of the region took out a protest procession against Chairthra and her supporters and even called for Subramanya Bundh on Thursday.
It is said that Vedike secretary Guruprasad Panja has suffered severe head injury due to the attack by Chaithra and her supporters and he has been admitted to Sullia government hospital.

The issue began as two groups got into an argument over the ongoing ‘sarpa samaskara’ row between Kukke temple and Subramanya Math. While one gang was supporting the temple, the other stood by the math.

It is said that Chaithra made some statements about the sarpa samaskara rituals held in the temple, which evoked support and also criticism on social networking sites. As a continuation to this, Vedike’s Sullia unit Secretary Guruprasad Panja and Ashith Kallaje and Chaithra had an argument over the phone on Wednesday. During the conversation, raged Chaithra challenged Guruprasad and Ashith to come face to face.

Following this, Guruprasad and Ashith Kallaje came to meet Chaithra at Kashikatte of Subramanya.

An altercation first broke out between the three and their supporters came in later, leading to full-blown attacks.

The police even resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the angry factions. Chaithra and seven of her supporters were detained.

Later, locals condemned Chaithra for her attitude and also the police for wielding lathi at locals and called for a bundh on Thursday.
