Tragedy struck Srikakulam district as two individuals were fatally hit by lightning in separate incidents. In Akulatampara village, Kotturu mandal, 62-year-old shepherd P. Simhachalam was returning from grazing cattle when lightning struck him dead.
In another case at Buddivalasa village, Sarubujjili mandal, 50-year-old farmer T. Appala Naidu was working in his field when he was killed by a sudden bolt from the sky. Both deaths occurred during unexpected weather activity, highlighting the growing risk during the pre-monsoon months.
Over the last four years, lightning has claimed more than 20 lives in the district, most of them farmers. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) reported that 41 people have died in lightning-related incidents statewide in 2025 alone.
Meteorologists warn that lightning strikes peak during heavy rains in May and June. They advise residents to seek solid shelter immediately during storms, preferably in well-built structures. Experts caution against standing near trees, electric poles, water bodies, or inside open sheds when lightning is active.
The recurring fatalities have raised concerns about the lack of awareness and preparedness in rural areas. With vulnerable outdoor workers at high risk, local officials are urged to ramp up lightning safety education and early warning systems.
