In a startling incident, teachers at a private school in Karthikappally recovered two live bullets from the school bag of a Class 8 student during a routine campus inspection. The discovery has triggered concern among parents, educators and local authorities.

Ammunition found during routine anti-drug inspection

The inspection was part of the school’s periodic checks conducted during break intervals to curb the use of narcotic substances and enhance campus safety. While examining students’ bags, teachers found two rounds of ammunition commonly used in a handgun.

Shocked staff members immediately notified the Karthikappally Police, who reached the campus and seized the bullets.

Student claims he picked them up unknowingly

Police officials said a detailed investigation has been launched to determine how the ammunition reached the minor’s possession. The student reportedly told officers that he had picked up the bullets from a nearby plot while walking to a tuition class and had placed them in his bag out of curiosity, unaware of their nature.

Investigators are verifying his statement and inspecting the area he mentioned to check for any supporting evidence.

Forensic examination and wider safety probe

The bullets will be sent for forensic analysis to determine their make, age and possible origin. Police sources also said they are looking into the possibility of illegal possession or careless disposal of ammunition in the locality.

Officials noted that uncovering live ammunition on school grounds raises significant safety concerns and requires a broader review of community vigilance.

School informs parents, steps up monitoring

The school management has informed parents about the incident and reassured them that inspections will continue. Officials emphasised that the aim is to keep students safe from drugs, weapons or other prohibited items and to strengthen awareness about responsible behaviour.

The incident has sparked concern among parents and educators, highlighting the importance of close monitoring of children’s activities both inside and outside school premises.
