Kannur: Just as Kerala is recovering from the devastating deluge that wrecked the state, Mathrubhumi’s Kannur division news editor Vinod Chandran and his wife, Saritha, were attacked by four men in their own home in the early hours of Thursday, September 6, shocking the entire state.

According to police, the incident took place between 1.30 am and 3.30 am on Thursday when the couple’s house was broken into, through the front door, by burglars.

Reportedly, Vinod and Saritha came out of their room to investigate the sounds they were hearing, when they were caught, bound and blindfolded. The burglars then proceeded to viciously assault the couple and then spent about an hour in the house, during which they stole Rs 35,000 in cash, 25 sovereigns of gold ornaments, ATM cards, laptops and mobile phones.

Once the burglars were gone, Vinod managed to free himself and call for help. The injured husband and wife were then rushed to the AKG Memorial Hospital in Kannur where they were admitted to the ICU as they had received severe injuries to their necks and faces.

It is believed that the men, who attacked the couple, are from outside Kerala as they reportedly spoke in Hindi and English.

The crime scene has been scrutinised by the dog squad as well as fingerprint experts and the case is being investigated by a team led by Kannur DySP PP Sadanandan and CI Pradeepan.
