Residents of parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka experienced mild tremors on Tuesday morning, as low-intensity earthquakes were recorded in Alluri Sitharama Raju and Vijayapura districts respectively. Authorities confirmed that there were no casualties or damage to property, and precautionary measures have been taken in both states.

3.7 magnitude quake strikes Alluri Sitharama Raju district

According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), a 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Alluri Sitharama Raju district at 4:19 am.
The tremor, detected at a depth of 10 km, was also felt in nearby regions, including parts of Visakhapatnam district. Officials said the quake was brief, lasting only a few seconds.

Disaster management teams were immediately placed on alert, although no structural damage or injuries were reported. The APSDMA said it continues to monitor the region for aftershocks or further seismic activity.

“Residents are advised not to panic. These are minor tremors with no cause for alarm,” an APSDMA spokesperson said, adding that awareness drives are being carried out in villages close to the epicentre.

Tremor felt in Vijayapura, Karnataka

In neighbouring Karnataka, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) recorded a 2.9 magnitude earthquake in Vijayapura district at 7:49 am.

The epicentre was located 3.6 km northwest of Bhutnal Tanda in Vijayapura taluk, at a shallow depth of 5 km. The tremor was reportedly felt within a 50–60 km radius, including parts of the city and surrounding villages.

KSNDMC officials classified the event as low-intensity, assuring residents that the tremor posed no threat to life or infrastructure. The area falls under Seismic Zone III, where minor quakes are not uncommon.

“Such tremors are mild and not harmful. We are closely observing the area for any aftershocks,” a KSNDMC official said.

Authorities urge calm, continue monitoring

Local authorities in both states have urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours on social media. Officials reiterated that both regions are geologically stable, and the quakes were natural occurrences rather than indicators of major seismic activity.

Experts note that small magnitude earthquakes are often recorded across parts of South India, particularly along the Eastern Ghats and Deccan plateau, where minor tectonic movements occur from time to time.

Both the APSDMA and KSNDMC said they are using advanced monitoring systems to track seismic activity and would issue public alerts if any unusual patterns are detected.

Precautionary measures in place

Disaster management teams in Alluri Sitharama Raju and Vijayapura have been asked to inspect key structures such as schools, hospitals, and water reservoirs to ensure safety standards.

Authorities also plan to conduct awareness campaigns in quake-prone areas to educate people on safety protocols during earthquakes, such as staying away from unstable structures and avoiding panic.

For now, officials in both Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have confirmed that there is no cause for concern, and normal life continues uninterrupted.
