Monsoon session Day 3 washed out; BJP attacks Vadra

New Delhi: The BJP on Thursday found a new handle with which to whip the Congress Party. PM Modi had hinted at it in Jammu in a speech on July 17th during his visit there,  when he took a dig at Vadra, saying that Dogra did not give undue advantage to his son-in-law unlike “some others these days” in the context of the 100th birth anniversary of Girdhari Lal Dogra.

Today, the BJP used the handle and waved it inside the house. They attacked the Congress for the Facebook posts of its Vice President’s brother in law.

“Parliament begins and so do their petty diversion political tactics… People of India are not fooled. Regret to see India led by such so called leaders!!!” Mr Vadra, 46, brother in law of Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi had said in his post on Tuesday, attacking the ruling BJP.

The matter when raised in the Lok Sabha by BJP lawmakers saw Sonia Gandhi shaking her head in disapproval, leading her party members to intensify their slogan-shouting against the government.

A privilege notice has now been admitted in Parliament against Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra.

“The privilege motion moved by the BJP’s chief whip Arjun Ram Meghwal alleges that this amounts to “contempt” and a “clear cut case of breach of privilege” and so should be referred to the privileges committee for “appropriate decision.”

The Congress asked Speaker Sumitra Mahajan why BJP lawmakers were allowed to carry and wave placards in the house while raising anti-Vadra slogans. The Opposition party reminded the Speaker that she had reprimanded Congress lawmakers yesterday for carrying placards to the house.

They also asked the Speaker to expunge the remarks of a BJP lawmaker against Mr Vadra who is not a member of the House. The Speaker assured the Congress that nothing unparliamentary will be allowed.

Earlier today, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi defended his party’s decision to block the Parliament from functioning, stating, “We have said there have to be resignations before any discussion.” The Congress is demanding the urgent removal of three top BJP leaders linked to major controversies.

“Our advice to the PM is this – your credibility is being eroded, listen to the people’s concern. Answer them by speaking on the controversies,” said Gandhi.

The government has said it is willing to debate with the opposition, but has rejected calls for the resignations of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for helping tainted cricket tycoon Lalit Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the Vyapam recruitment scam.

The stand-off between the opposition and the government has meant that the first three days of Parliament’s 21-day monsoon session have been squandered with noisy disruptions forcing adjournments. Crucial legislation, including the major tax reform of the National Goods and Sales Tax, are pending.

The Left and some other opposition parties have backed the Congress demand for the removal of Ms Swaraj and the two chief ministers, for what they call national scandals. The Samajawadi Party says it only wants the chief ministers removed.
