MP grooms forced to take ‘selfie with loo’ as part of govt scheme for brides

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has implemented a bizzare scheme that forces the groom to take a standing selfie in his toilet, so that the bride can avail an amount of Rs 51,000 under the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana.

This scheme has been implemented so that the bride can prove that the groom’s house has a toilet.

Although first introduced in 2013, the “selfie with loo” clause is a new addition to the scheme.

Earlier, the amount given through the scheme that was launched for the benefit of the economically-weaker sections was Rs 28,000. However, the present Congress government in MP has raised it to Rs 51,000.

According to reports, the application for the scheme will be accepted, and the amount will be sanctioned, only after the bride proves that her husbands’ house has a toilet and attaches a validating image along with the application.

Speaking to TOI, Department of Social Justice and Disabled Welfare Principle Secretary J N Kansotiya opined that the addition of the ‘selfie with loo’ clause was not a bad thing and that the department had not yet issued any such directive.

“The implementation of the policy can be better,” he added.

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation, the department in-charge of the scheme, C B Mishra also stood by the opinion of J N Kansotiya.

Elaborating on the scheme, Mishra said that the relaxation in the policy, which previously gave a 30-day-timeframe to the groom to build a toilet, was erased in the amended version. He also said that there was nothing wrong with the policy as it was not a wedding card.
