My son was ‘supporter’ of Modi, Shah: Shaheen Bagh shooter’s father

New Delhi: The case of the Shaheen Bagh shooter, Kapil Gujjar, only seems to be getting more complicated. Gujjar’s father, Gaje Singh has now come out to say that his son is a “supporter” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

It can be recalled that after the Delhi Police arrested Gujjar, a search of his phone revealed he had photos of his father and himself with prominent Aam Aadmi Party leaders. Based on the year-old photos, the police said that Gujjar and his father were both members of AAP.

On Wednesday, however, Gujjar’s father disputed the police’s claims stating that neither he nor his family had any ties to AAP. He clarified he is a former member of the BSP and that he had quit politics in 2012 after falling ill. He also explained the photos saying that they were with AAP members because they were made to stand along with the party leaders and given their caps during their campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

Hours later that same day, Singh said that his son, Kapil is a “supporter of Modi”. “He was a follower of Modi and Amit Shah,” Singh was quoted by ANI.

He explained that Gujjar was “troubled about the roads being blocked at Shaheen Bagh… because a job would take him four hours instead of one”.

Singh further said that his son always spoke of “Hindustan” and “Hindutva”, indicating that Gujjar had right-wing and nationalistic views.

It can be recalled that on Tuesday, February 4 evening, Kapil Gujjar (25), shouted “Jai Shri Ram” before opening fire in the air near the anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh. This was one of three such incidents that occurred within a span of four days.
