New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Friday got adjourned till noon amid chaos as the opposition sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his reported remarks that opposition parties favoured black money.

Soon after the House met, opposition members were on their feet demanding Modi’s apology. The Leader of the Opposition, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said it was promised on Thursday that Modi would sit through the debate on demonetisation but he did not. But he made remarks that the opposition was unhappy with the government’s decision to demonetise high value currency because it was not given any time to “save” its unaccounted money.

BSP chief Mayawati, Naresh Aggarwal of the Samajwadi Party and others in the opposition echoed the sentiments. Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav said Modi’s remarks were “a serious allegation against the opposition parties”. The Prime Minister should come to the House and apologise, they demanded.

The Chair then adjourned the house till noon.
