New Delhi: The Supreme Court, on Monday asked the central government what was the prestige issue revolving around the controversial farm laws, which has drawn scores of farmers on streets to protest.
“Tell us whether you will put the laws on hold or else we will do it. What’s the prestige issue here?” said the Apex Court while hearing petitions challenging the farm laws and the farmer agitation at the Delhi borders.
Chief Justice SA Bobde said that each person will be responsibe if something goes wrong. “We don’t want any injuries or blood on our hands,” Chief Justice of India said adding that the centre was not dealing with the issue effectively.
The CJI also asked the centre who was going to be responsible if there was any bloodshed?
The Court maintained that the situation had only gone worse and also questioned why the old and the women were part of the agitation in such a harsh weather.
The court directed the centre to set up a committee.
Attorney General KK Venugopal, arguing for the government urged the court not to stay the laws and also quoted a past judgement stating courts can’t hold a law without going into its unconstitutionality.
The Attorney General also pointed out that farmers from two to three states were protesting while farmers from southern and western parts of India were not participating.
The next meeting will be held on Friday.
