New Delhi: The All India Congress Committee President Rahul Gandhi tendered an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 8, for attributing the ‘chowkidar chor hai’ slogan to it, with a request to drop the contempt proceedings against him.
He was left with no alternative after the bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi rejected Rahul’s previous affidavit that had expressed “regret.” He was also admonished for making contradictory statements. He had to tender an unqualified apology to put an end to the contempt case.
Rahul’s new affidavit reads, “The Deponent unconditionally apologises for the wrongful attributions to this Hon’ble Court. The Deponent further states that any such attributions were entirely unintentional, non-willful and inadvertent.”
It further says that Rahul held the Supreme Court in the highest esteem and respect and that he had never sought or intended to, directly or indirectly, commit any act that interfered with the process of administration of justice.
Rahul has requested the apex court to draw the curtains on the contempt proceedings moved by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
