Robberies on trains spark GRP crackdown, special mobile-theft campaign launched
In response to two recent violent robberies aboard Mumbai-bound long-distance trains, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has ramped up security efforts and launched a dedicated campaign to recover stolen mobile phones. Railway Police Commissioner Rakesh Kalasagar announced that two GRP personnel will now be deployed on each of the 31 long-distance trains leaving Mumbai daily.
The incidents include a June 1 robbery in which a family was targeted aboard the Jaipur-Bandra Express, losing cash and valuables worth ₹7 lakh. On June 5, a doctor couple was pulled off a moving train during a robbery attempt, resulting in the husband’s arm being amputated.
GRP data shows a worrying trend: over 11,000 mobile phones have been stolen on railway premises in 2024 alone. Special teams have been formed to trace mobile phones stolen over the last five years.
Despite these efforts, manpower shortages plague the Railway Protection Force (RPF), with 758 posts — including 25% officer roles — lying vacant.
