Russian Soldier’s Last Rites Held in Gokarna as per Hindu Traditions
The final rites of Russian soldier Sergey Grablev, who lost his life in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, were conducted following Hindu customs at the sacred Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple in Gokarna, Karnataka.
Grablev, a dedicated follower of Hinduism, had been visiting Gokarna for the past 18 years. He had also received spiritual initiation in Varanasi, deepening his connection to Indian traditions and philosophy.
Despite the war’s dangers, he chose to return to combat duty and was killed in action on April 28. Known for his spiritual devotion and respected among his peers, Grablev’s passing left many mourning across borders.
Since his immediate family couldn’t travel to India, the rituals were overseen by local priest V Prashant Hiregange, with one of his relatives, Elena, joining the ceremonies via video call to honor his memory.
The funeral ceremonies included Narayanabali, a sacred fire ritual believed to liberate the soul and guide it toward salvation, and Pinda Daan, where rice balls mixed with ghee and sesame seeds are offered to departed ancestors—a key aspect of Hindu death rites aimed at ensuring peace for the soul.
Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple, where the rites were held, dates back to the 4th century AD and was built by Mayur Sharma of the Kadamba dynasty. It is revered as one of Karnataka’s seven Muktikshetras—spiritual centers believed to grant liberation.
Located near Karwar beach, the temple is both a pilgrimage site and a well-known tourist attraction.
