School in AP parades students nude, loses recognition

Hyderabad: An English medium school in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday, December 26, made its students strip and stand in the hot sun as punishment.

The incident which took place in the Chaitanya Bharati School at Nanasahebpet of Punganur, came to light after a video shot by a passerby on his mobile phone become viral.

The police said that six students in the age group of 10 were asked to strip and stand outside the classroom in full public view for being late to the school and for not doing their homework. Some students could be seen totally naked trying to cover their private parts, others were seen in their undergarments while one with his pants on.

Mandal Education Officer Leela Rani conducted an inquiry at the school on Thursday, December 27.

“There were others students watching us from nearby classrooms and there were also people on the road next to the wall of the school from where we were visible,” told a student to Leela Rani, during the inquiry.

Speaking to the reporters, Leela Rani, said, “We came to know of it on Wednesday evening and we have immediately initiated action.”

The parents of the punished students have filed a complaint with the local police. Police have arrested school correspondent Nagaraju Naidu.

The District Education Officer and the Regional Joint Director spoke to the victims and revoked the recognition of the school.

Expressing strong condemnation on the incident, few parents’ associations and students in the Punganur town staged protest marches.
