Mumbai: While the entire nation is showing solidarity with the flood victims of Chennai, the sex workers from Ahmednagar in Maharashtra, in a noble gesture pooled together a sum of Rs 1 lac by contributing a part of their savings and by living on just one meal a day to ensure that they donate money for the ongoing relief work in Chennai.
A sum thus collected was handed over by them to District Collector Anil Kawade during an event organised by NGO Snehalaya.
Snehalaya Founder Girish Kulkarni was quoted saying that the women were restless when they came to know of the Chennai floods and decided to do something to help the victims.
It is said that out of 3,000 sex workers in the district 2,000 contributed towards the noble cause.
“We are in touch with Delhi-based NGO Goonj for ensuring further relief to the people of Chennai,” Kulkarni added.
