Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the new governor of the ‘Reserve Bank of India’ (RBI) on Tuesday. The Former finance secretary and current member of the finance commission is known as the Centre’s face during demonetisation. He was appointed as the new RBI governer almost 24 hours after Urjit Patel resigned from the post, citing personal reasons for the decision.
Das, has replaced Urjit Patel, who resigned unexpectedly amid confrontation with the central government over issues related to autonomy of the central bank.
Twitterati are digging up Shaktikanta Das’s past comments to question his appointment, and Das finds himself as the new favourite pastime on Twitter.
Das does not have a degree in business or economics, and people have brought up his qualification to be the governor. Google trends show that people started searching for his educational qualifications soon after the announcement of him taking charge as the new governer of RBI.
Das is primarily known for being the first to answer questions on the November 2016 decision to demonetise old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
Das holds a Master’s Degree in History, and also done advanced financial management course from IIM Bangalore and development banking and institutional credit from the NIBM. He has got in-service professional training in financial management in Institute Public Enterprises.
To be the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, it is not necessary to have a degree in economics or finance.
