Mumbai: The Mumbai police appeared to have gotten an important breakthrough in the Sheena Bora Murder case. They had gone to Raigad district on friday in search of evidence to nail the accused in the murder case, Indrani Mukerjea, Her driver Rai, and her second husband, Sanjiv Khanna, and found, in the place where Sheena Bora’s body was dumped some bones, a skull and a suitcase. The police are still at the spot and digging for more remains is still on in Pen in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.

Brother Mikhail arrives in Mumbai

Earlier, Sheena Bora’s brother Mikhail, who arrived in Mumbai from Guwahati, on Friday, said he will cooperate with police in the probe of his sister’s murder as more details of the murky case and cover-up bid are expected to emerge later in the day.

“I will extend full cooperation to Mumbai Police. I will get justice for her,” Mikhail, who arrived here this afternoon, told a TV channel on board the flight.

Mikhail had earlier told the media that he has evidence on the murder of Sheena. He also told reporters outside the house, where he lives with his maternal grandparents in Guwahati, that he feared he would be the next target.

A Mumbai Police team had earlier visited the maternal home of Indrani in Guwahati and talked to Mikhail.

Fair idea of motive

Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, after hours of grilling of Indrani, her driver Shyam Rai and step son Rahul Mukerjea at suburban Khar police station, said late on Thursday night that police have a ‘fair idea’ about the motive of the murder, but declined to elaborate saying the “third accused” (Sanjeev Khanna) was yet to be interrogated.

“We have a fair idea of the motive of the murder. However, the third accused (Khanna) is yet to reach Mumbai and to be interrogated. Only then, we will be able to tell you about the motive,” Maria said.

Sanjiv Khanna remanded to police custody

Indrani Mukerjea’s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna was brought before the Bandra magistrate court in Mumbai. He was remanded to police custody till August 21.

The Mumbai Police questioning Khanna told a Kolkata court that he was allegedly involved not only in the murder of Sheena Bora on April 24, 2012, but also with its planning.

The submission made by Mumbai Police at the Alipore court claimed Indrani had told them how she had a recceed Raigad’s Pen area with her driver Shyam Rai on April 23 to “identify the exact spot where to dispose of the body.”

Khanna has claimed that he had climbed into the SUV driven by Shyam along with Indrani, but had dozed off a few minutes later. He claimed that when he woke up he found Sheena dead near him.

Alipore city court on Thursday granted Mumbai Police Khanna’s five-day remand after rejecting his bail plea.

Indrani seeks to meet her lawyers

Meanwhile, a local court on Friday allowed the application filed by lawyer of Indrani Mukerjea, accused in the murder case of her daughter Sheena Bora, seeking permission to meet her. Indrani’s lawyer had moved the court on Thursday saying that police were not allowing her lawyers to meet her. The Bandra court, while allowing the application, directed the police to follow the guidelines framed by the apex court on the rights of the accused.

Mukerjea’s lawyer Gunjan Mangala had told the court that when the lawyers went to meet her, the police denied the permission repeatedly. Indrani’s lawyer had yesterday moved an application in the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Bandra seeking home food, clothes and permission to meet her in custody. The court sought a reply from the prosecution on the application and adjourned the hearing.
