New Delhi: Union Minister Smriti Irani raked up the “Rape in India’ comment made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Jharkhand on Thursday and demanded an apology from him.

“This is for the first time in history that a leader is giving a clarion call that Indian women should be raped. Is this Rahul Gandhi’s message to the people of the country? He should be punished. Not all men are rapists. This is an insult to India… Rahul Gandhi is touching 50, and doesn’t realize that such a statement seems like an invitation to rape in India,” Irani said in the Lok Sabha on Friday amidst BJP MPs raising slogans against Rahul Gandhi.

BJP leaders protested, leading to the house being adjourned till noon. Gandhi had said that Narendra Modi had said ‘Make in India’, but nowadays, wherever you look, it is ‘Rape in India,” he had said questioning the silence of the Prime Minister over rape and murder cases being reported in the country.

Taunting the BJP, he had also said that Modi only said ‘Beti Padao, Beti Bachao’, but he did not mention that the daughters should be saved from BJP’s MLAs.

The debate started over some of the shocking rape and murder cases that have been reported in the country- from Hyderabad Vet’s rape and murder case to Unnao rape case. In both of the cases, the victim was raped and set ablaze by the perpetrators.
