Kolkata: In order to introduce students to a new dimension of academics, the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), has decided to introduce a course titled “An interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law: Special focus on Rowling’s Potterverse.”

This is introduced for the students as an open elective in the fourth and fifth year of BA LLB (Hons).

NJUS has attempted to introduce this unique concept, in order to encourage students to explore the legal aspects of J K Rowling’s fictional world. Her fictions are said to be associated with many real-life instances.

Assistant Professor Shovik Sharma, who has introduced this in the curriculum is said to definitely get a deviation from the orthodox law lectures.

Speaking about the concept, Professor Guha has said that this course was introduced on an experimental basis and that it will take both students and the professors out of one’s comfort zone.

Professor Guha believes that the students will be brought out from boredom and that they will learn to apply the principles of law mentioned in the J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series in the real world.

At first Prof. Guha had decided to introduce political scenarios into the curriculum, but understanding the fact that not many students will be interested in political affairs, thus introduced fiction.

The fiction that is introduced is said to introduce students to numerous instances of the rich controlling the government policies. The fiction is said to serve as a reflection of their own government.

The course will commence in December.

The attempt of incorporating this fiction is not first of its kind in the country. A former student of NUJS has said that she had chosen Potter-centric fiction law course back in 2012 in the Jindal Global Law School, Sonipat, which she says was interesting.

This fiction of Rowling is said to be already introduced in some of the international universities, across the streams.
