Dehradun: Two professors of IIT Roorkee have been arrested in connection with the collapse of an under-construction bridge in Tehri district that claimed eight lives three years ago.

Vipul Prakash and Vijay Kumar Gupta, both professors of IIT Roorkee’s civil engineering department, were arrested from their apartments in Roorkee’s civil lines area last evening, Haridwar SSP Sweety Agarwal said on Monday.

Police said an NBW was issued against these professors recently after they had failed to appear in court.

The two professors had prepared the design of an under- construction bridge over river Alaknanda at Chauras in Tehri district which collapsed while being built in the year 2012 killing eight people including a junior engineer.

Owners of two construction companies involved in the building of the bridge were arrested last Thursday in connection with the case.

An NBW was issued against these professors recently after they had failed to appear in court, said Chandan Singh Bisht, inspector incharge of Kirtinagar police station where a case is lodged in connection with the incident.
