Two Indians arrested, Pakistan official quizzed over spying

New Delhi: Two Indian nationals working for Pakistani intelligence ISI were arrested for leaking sensitive information, a police officer said on Thursday. A staff member of the Pakistan High Commission was also detained by police after he was found to be in possession of defence related documents.

The staffer, identified as Mehmood Akhtar, was questioned by the Inter State Cell of Crime Branch, after the arrest of two men from Rajasthan for allegedly leaking the documents to him. However, Akhtar, was later let off due to diplomatic immunity.

The two, identified as Maulana Ramzan and Subhash Jangir, are residents of Rajasthan and worked for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for some time. The arrests were made late Wednesday night by the interstate cell of Crime Branch following a tip off from the Intelligence Bureau.

Some employees in the Pakistani mission came under scrutiny last year after a spy ring associated with Pakistan’s intelligence was exposed and five people, including a non-commissioned Air Force officer, were arrested. The police say today’s arrests may be connected to that network.

The spying allegations have reemerged amid strained relations between the two countries over terror attacks from Pakistan, especially last month’s Uri attack in which 19 soldiers were killed. In what was widely seen as retaliation, the army carried out surgical strikes on September 29 across the Line of Control to target terror staging camps.
