Valuing ‘sentiments’, Delhi civic body wants ban of non-veg image display

New Delhi: You are hungry to the point of blindness… you, a non-vegetarian, frantically look around to see if you can spot the image of a grilled chicken, or some juicy kababs on a skewer, or perhaps some scrumptious chicken biryani but, to your dismay all you see are images of regular vegetarian dishes… no offense.

The South Delhi civic body, seems to be taking “sensitivity” to a whole new ridiculous level by proposing a ban on the display of non-vegetarian dishes out in the open. Their reason? The hygiene and “sentiments of people” might get “affected by the sight” of meat!

Whatever happened to “if you don’t like something, ignore it”?

The proposal was floated during a meeting in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) House, which was approved by the leader of the House, Shikha Rai. This proposal is said to hold good for both raw and cooked meat of all sorts.

According to a SDMC spokesperson, the private member resolution was originally moved by a councillor of the Kakrola village in the Najafgrh Zone, in the health committee meeting.

The resolution will be sent to the Commissioner to be examined, after which he may or may not accept it depending on whether it is in accordance with the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

It’s a real wonder why the resolution has come up after so long!

This obviously did not sit well with many including those from political parties and the medical fraternity.

The opposition stated that this was a power move by the BJP as they are the majority in the House.

The Indian Medical Association stated that food needs to be hygienic regardless of whether it is non-vegetarian or not. They also questioned the logic behind the move and asked why vegetarian food and snacks were not included in the order.

Some restauranteurs have asked for a solution as to how they can display the food in a proper manner as they would require a way to entice the non-vegetarians to their establishments… something that will be a difficult task without the images. One restauranteur even stated the their reason that the “sight of non-veg food offends sentiments of people does not hold water”.
